Multilingual birds

A short cartoon to support children´s engagement in learning languages. It motivates children to learn, use and keep languages. It was produced by the project team of the Multilingual Families.

There are many online tools for creating simple animations such as this one. Enhancing speaking, writing and creative literacy skills is an important support to many aspects of learning. Animated videos offer a way to experiment and utilise these skills in a way that removes constraints caused by psychological barriers to production in L2 learners and minimize stress connected to productive skills as this instrument allows them to express contents confidently through cartoon characters.

Learners write and create a subject to narrate their experience in a foreign country. They write a script in the target language and shoot the mini-documentary in target language,  following the script that they wrote.   At the end they can subtitle the documentary in the mother tongue.   Alternatively, the video could be realized in the mother tongue  and subtitled in the target language. In this case the learning objectives are different.

 

Video for homework

 

Using an integrated video recording tool within his course page on a Moodle VLE, this Higher Education student has submitted a video assignment which was set for homework. The assignment set a topic which he reflected on, he prepared a script and then performed the response, recording it using his laptop webcam connecting through the virtual learning environment in his student room. Once he was happy with the recording, he was able to submit it for marking to his tutor.

Virtual acting skills

Machinima (filming in computer-generated environments) allows us to create recordings in simulated environments that would otherwise be too expensive to visit or to recreate settings populated by actors (using avatars) in order to capture or produce “real-life” situations. The real voices of the actors are used in the filming.  In this example great care has been taking with the scripting and post-production to create an interesting example of  a role-play scenario which is linguistically accessible to Italian language learners.

Photo stories combine still images and text to create a simple story. Photo stories rely on basic ideas of video production, they offer an opportunity to provide discussion starters for e new topic. A range of technologies are available to combine still images and text, such as Microsoft Powerpoint. Music can be added to give atmosphere. This example was created as part of the Divis project.

Remembering an event – Pecha Kucha day

Students create a video clip with pictures, videos, interviews and bloopers and outtakes with classmates and teachers about a specific project done in class or a special event which took place at school. This is an excellent way to reflect on the learning process (especially through the interviews) and a good keepsake for students which they love having, watching and sharing. It is also useful to be used with future students so that they see the work done by “real” people like them. Bloopers and outtakes are really funny and add enjoyment to the final product.

Learn my language..it’s fun! Araba Euskaraz

Students created a video to promote their language and culture.This video encourages people to speak Basque and not set it aside. Teachers in the video encourage everyone to speak Basque at school, with friends and with the family and to enjoy speaking that language. Besides launching this message, they are celebrating Ikastola’s Day. Every year, the Basque community create a new video with the same topic.

Event capture

This recording of researcher Robert O’Dowd presenting his description of the skills necessary for teachers to facilitate Online intercultural Exchange (OIE) was part of an online conference which was organised and hosted by the Language Centre at the University of Warwick. Recording a webinar or event is a great way of sharing afterwards and allows more people to review and respond to the content.

Feedback on Essay

The teacher is providing feedback on the student’s written work. The teacher has opened the student’s work onto the screen, read it and then turns on the screen capture software and goes through the essay, highlight various parts and discussing it. The teacher could go through and make the highlights first and then begin the recording. The resulting video in then sent to the students. The students receive feedback that is both visual and aural. This particular idea has been widely disseminated, research has found that listening to the tutor’s voice gives greater insight into the tone of their feedback, this HEA funded research for example The teacher simply marks out the area of the screen and clicks a button. Whatever is under the marked area will be recorded as a video along with the voice. It makes no difference to the screen cast tool what is on the screen. It simply records the area that has been marked out. This particular example was used using SnagIt.

Video Words

The original Speech Bubbles idea is based on children presenting words in their own mother tongue to other children across Europe (the programmes were broadcast on local television). Equally words in a foreign language can be presented. This practice is more suited for the lower language competences.

Words can be chosen from any theme which is done as part of the language lesson.
