Creative collages

Creative collages is about bringing words (written and spoken) together in a modern style video production. Students can type words, cut out printed words, create their own words, put them together on top of each other, combine them with other materials. At the same time words / sentences can be recorded and combined with the images. These ideas work well in conjunction with the art lesson.

Telephone conversations

This video starring some of the Pelican staff was made especially for
Video for all meeting in Brno. It shows a simple recording of both sides
of a telephone conversation edited together.

Having met examples of telephone language and practised key
expressions, learners can script and capture a conversation using
simple video techniques. They can plan the location and make the
recordings of both halves of the conversation separately and then edit
them together

Multilingual birds

A short cartoon to support children´s engagement in learning languages. It motivates children to learn, use and keep languages. It was produced by the project team of the Multilingual Families.

There are many online tools for creating simple animations such as this one. Enhancing speaking, writing and creative literacy skills is an important support to many aspects of learning. Animated videos offer a way to experiment and utilise these skills in a way that removes constraints caused by psychological barriers to production in L2 learners and minimize stress connected to productive skills as this instrument allows them to express contents confidently through cartoon characters.

Exploring vocabulary

This video demonstrates how language learners can use the TOOLS project dictionary tool. The project was funded by the EU.

Computer Assisted Language Learning can particularly help for teaching the less widely taught languages. Use of a computer or mobile apps can increase access to resources and tools but learning design should always include a range of activities. Exploring vocabulary in this way can help learners to take control of their learning and construct meaning themselves.

This activity captures reflection in a foreign language. It follows a standard video production approach and works especially well within adult education. It is also a useful way of capturing a particular use of language, in this case tense.

Define love

A modern dictionary for a modern audience through video for all. Learners create a video about a word or expression of their choice using signs, written examples in context, providing a definition of the word, acting to illustrate the word in context or describing what a word means to them, illustrating it with personal experiences.

Using screen capture for providing feedback on vocabulary

Here is an example of using screen cast videos to give feedback to students on their vocabulary. The teacher has been taking notes in the classroom, focusing on some of the vocabulary problems the students are having. The teacher then writes up the words into a word processor and turns on the screen capture software and records themselves going through the words, providing guidance on pronunciation, stress and spelling. The teacher could even focus on meaning or provide an example sentence using the word. Once the recording is made, the teacher can send the video to the students via an email or upload the link or video to a blog, wiki or the virtual learning environment if the institution has one.
